Considering we sleep for around a third of our lives, you’d think more people would be keen to make sure they have the right mattress to sleep on. Budget is often the biggest factor that people point to when it comes to getting a good night’s sleep. Time for a new mattress

You wouldn’t try to run a 5K race without a comfy pair of shoes, or tackle a 500-mile road trip without a comfortable car. So, why do you insist on trying to sleep on an uncomfortable mattress every night? If you’re tossing and turning every night, it could be a sign that you need a new mattress. Likewise, if you find that you always sleep better when you’re away from home, such as when you’re staying with family or in a hotel, then it might be time to upgrade your mattress. You might assume that you aren’t sleeping because you’re stressed, but often, stress is caused by a lack of sleep. In a small study of 59 healthy men and women, researchers tested the impact of a new mattress on things like stress levels and headaches. Half of the group slept on their normal mattress for 28 days while half of the group were given new mattresses. Those with the new mattresses reported a significant decrease in their stress levels.

Take the office out of the bedroom

If you like to take your work to bed with you at night, you might want to stop this practice. It might feel productive to blast through emails at 11 pm, but it’s going to have a negative impact on your sleep. Your bed should be reserved for just two activities, and we’re sure you can guess what they are. Technology, including TVs, laptops and mobile phones emit blue light which mimics sunlight and makes your brain think its daytime. This leads to confused sleep cycles and makes it harder to fall asleep. Leave your work out of the bedroom if you want more restful sleep.

You could be allergic to your bed

It’s not so much the mattress you could be allergic to, but what’s lurking within it. Dust mites feed on the skin cells that you shed every single night, and some people are allergic to this little mites. To combat them, choose hypoallergenic bedding and use a mattress topper which can be put in the washing machine. Also, ensure that you vacuum your mattress regularly to keep dust mites at bay.

Try before you buy

There are no standard definitions for “firm” or “soft” which makes buying a mattress even more difficult. A common problem that people face is that they follow advice about what they should be sleeping on instead of following what feels right for them. You should always follow your instincts when buying a mattress and choose one that feels comfortable to you. Just avoid mattress shopping after a long day, as everything will feel better than being on your feet.

Buying online is often cheaper than buying one in a store, but this doesn’t mean you can’t try before you buy. Visit a ‘bricks and mortar’ store to try out a few beds and then look for a cheaper alternative online if you are on a tight budget.
